Development Strategy for POB Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for years 2022-2026
The main goal is to achieve the position of a leading research unit in this area in the country and its wide recognition in the world by the Research Centre for the Priority Research Area Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CB POB SzIR).
A. Specific goals of the activity of CB POB SzIR
- Initiating world-class research on Artificial Intelligence and robotics.
- Supporting the acquisition of funds (both from national and international sources) for conducting research in this area.
- Supporting cooperation with the University's economic environment.
- Encouraging the involvement of young researchers, doctoral students, and students in research funded by CB POB SzIR.
- Human resources development by supporting work on doctoral and habilitation dissertations in the area of SzIR.
- Organisation of seminars popularising the results of POB SzIR research and indicating the possibilities of establishing cooperation.
- Supporting initiatives leading to the integration of the national AI and robotics research community.
B. Main actions to achieve the goals
The above goals are easiest to achieve with the best PW research teams involved. Hence, CB POB SzIR will organise competitions for grants financed by the Centre as part of its budget. However, the position of the Warsaw University of Technology cannot be created only by a few of the best teams, so conditions should be created to improve the capabilities of all teams operating at the University. The easiest way to achieve this is through integration, i.e. financing research conducted jointly by numerous teams. On the one hand, this leads to the synergy of activities, and on the other, weaker teams will improve their research skills by observing the better ones. Hence, the strategy emphasises the integration aspect.
The goals of the CB POB SzIR activity will be achieved primarily through the organisation of two types of competitions for grants intended for the implementation of projects:
- One-team
- Multi-team
In both cases, the competition will give preference to projects which will result in:
- Publications for at least 140 points of MNiSW.
- Applications for external grants.
- Establishing international cooperation.
- Establishing cooperation with the economic environment.
- Engaging young researchers, doctoral students, and students in project work.
- Supporting work on doctoral and habilitation theses.
In addition, in the case of multi-team projects, preference will be given to:
- Confederations of teams belonging to different units of the Warsaw University of Technology.
- Consistency of the goal to be achieved by the project group.
Grant applications will have to include specific quantitative commitments to the above outcomes.
During university seminars, the Scientific Council of CB POB SzIR will control the compliance of project implementation with the adopted timetables and will also require the fulfilment of contractual obligations at the end of the project implementation.
C. Expected outcomes
The expected outcomes of the activities of CB POB SzIR will be:
- Publications for at least 140 points of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, in proportion to the budget allocated to competitions organised by the Centre.
- Innovative solutions to technical problems implemented in the national economy.
- Applications for national and European grants, in proportion to the number of projects financed by the Centre.
- Contracts for research work conducted to the benefit of the economic environment.
- Patent applications.
- Significant participation of doctoral students, students, and young researchers in implemented projects.
- Advancement of work on doctorates and habilitations of project participants.
- Increasing the awareness of research work conducted at PW, thanks to the general availability of university seminars on Artificial Intelligence and robotics.
- Integration of the environment and the creation of intellectual ferment leading to the initiation of innovative research work.
- Projects leading to the creation of emblematic systems increasing the recognition of the University.
