The current crisis related to the COVID-19 pandemic brought the researchers’ attention to the need of creating hybrid fibre filters, which can be utilised in air-conditioning or ventilating systems in buildings, in particular in hospitals and other health centres. At the moment, a research team at WUT is working on this kind of solution. The project implementation is funded by the research grant Technologie Materiałowe-1.

The interaction of light and matter is one of the most fascinating processes occurring in nature. Chemistry and physics of photoactive compounds are the fields in which these phenomena are particularly interesting. A team of scientists at the Faculty of Chemistry at the Warsaw University of Technology is working on a new concept of designing effective photosensitisers whose main role is to produce reactive oxygen forms to be eventually used in the process of water purification and in medicine. 

The physics of heavy ion collisions is a field that aims at learning about the character of the strong force.  Since it is impossible to isolate a single colour particle, describing a phase diagram of strong interactions of matter has become a priority. A single experimental measurement is not sufficient to define such a structure. Hence, it is necessary to conduct various analyses in many fields in which each field provides a part of the answer. WUT researchers are making a great contribution to the conducted research.

New financing

A team of WUT researchers at the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering and Centre for Advanced Materials and Technologies, and a team of immunologists are jointly working on devising a nanovaccine based on recombinant proteins of SARS-CoV-2 virus covalently bonded with biodegradable nanoparticles of iron oxide.  The research is implemented as part of the competition for research grants IDUB against COVID-19.

The construction of control systems in power electronic transformation systems employs two control methods utilising a cascade control scheme with feedback from individual object outputs and controllers with feedback from the vector of variables of an object state. And what if these two concepts are merged? Researchers at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Warsaw University of Technology have undertaken this task.

As part of the implementation of a research grant awarded in FWEiTE-1 competition, a team from the Faculty of Physics at the Warsaw University of Technology has undertaken research on the geometry and dynamics of heavy ion collisions utilising the correlation femtoscopy method, in close cooperation with scientists all over the world within  STAR (RHIC), HADES (SIS-18) and CBM (SIS-100) experiments. In their work, researchers place special emphasis on the analysis of a phase diagram of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) in an area which still remains unexplored, i.e. heavy ion collisions, in so far untested range of collision energies amounting to a few or a few dozen giga electron volts (GeV).

96 applications were submitted to the BEYOND POB competition. The applications evaluation process is currently underway.

Prof. Małgorzata Lewandowska, IDUB project team leader, and scientists connected with the Research Centres ranked among two percent of the world’s most-cited scientists.

The Rector of Warsaw University of Technology Professor Krzysztof Zaremba took part in the first meeting of the Board of Directors of the ENHANCE Alliance being part of the “European universities” project. The meeting took place on the 11th of January 2021.

Professor Małgorzata Kujawińska (Scientific Council of Priority Research Photonic Technologies) and Professor Krzysztof Patorski (both from the Photonics Engineering Division, Micromechanics and Photonics Institute, Faculty of Mechatronics) were among the winners of prestigious scientific awards granted by The International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE).

The Warsaw University of Technology students will be represented in the management bodies of the ENHANCE consortium.

Results 

A team of researchers from the WUT and Centre for Physical Sciences and Technology (FTMC) based in Vilnius, headed by Agnieszka Siemion, PhD from the Faculty of Physics at the Warsaw University of Technology, is working on the use of terahertz radiation in imaging phantoms of healthy and cancerous tissues. The research is implemented as part of FOTECH-1 research grant competition.

WUT announces the internal grant competition funded by the project ,,Excellence Initiative – Research University”, for the employees of the Warsaw University Technology supporting an application submitted in the European Research Council (ERC) competition.

The international the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has published conclusions from the results of its research in the prestigious scientific journal “Nature”. Among the people involved in this project are also scientists related to PR High Energy Physics and Experimental Techniques.

The AEgIS experiment (Antihydrogen Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) aims to measure the gravitational fall of an antihydrogen pulsed beam. At the end of October WUT Rector signed the Memorandum of Understanding with CERN allowing WUT to become a full member of the AEgIS Collaboration. The project is supported by Priority Research High Energy Physics and Experimental Techniques (PR HEP).
